Privacy-first publishers
Ghost and WordPress publishers who don't want Google tracking their readers. Matomo gives them full analytics without compromising reader privacy.
EU/UK e-commerce
GDPR-compliant analytics with full data residency in EU. Built-in consent mode (no banner required for cookie-less tracking).
Agencies managing multiple sites
Single Matomo instance can track unlimited sites via the roll-up reporting plugin. Each site gets its own report, the agency gets the cross-site view.
GA4 is free, ubiquitous, and a privacy nightmare. It uses cookies, fingerprints users, sends data to Google, and now requires a consent banner in the EU. Matomo on Leapjuice is GDPR-compliant by default, cookie-free, and your data stays on your server. Same metrics, none of the surveillance.
Plausible and Fathom are great lightweight options, but they're paid SaaS ($9-$19/mo) with limited features. No heatmaps, no session recording, no custom reports, no e-commerce tracking. Matomo is a full Google Analytics replacement.
Matomo has a 100MB+ install, requires PHP 7.4+, MySQL/MariaDB, careful cron configuration for archiving, and ongoing maintenance for security updates. We handle it all.

Questions, answered.
Do I need a cookie consent banner with Matomo?
No — if you enable the default cookie-less tracking, Matomo uses no cookies and no personal data, so it's GDPR-compliant without a consent banner. If you turn on heatmaps or session recording, you need consent for those.
Is Matomo really as good as Google Analytics?
For most use cases, yes. Real-time reports, audience segmentation, e-commerce tracking, attribution, custom events, custom dimensions — all there. The few features GA4 has that Matomo doesn't (BigQuery export, GA4-specific ML predictions) are niche.
How many sites can I track with one instance?
Unlimited. Each site gets its own Matomo site ID. The Premium tier handles 100+ tracked sites comfortably; Enterprise can handle 1,000+ with custom archival configuration.
Can I import my Google Analytics data?
Yes. Matomo has a GA importer that pulls historical data via the GA Reporting API. The migration is non-trivial for sites with millions of sessions, but the official Matomo importer is well-documented.
Is my data on EU or US servers?
Default is US (us-central1 built on Google Cloud). EU data residency is available on Enterprise tier — your Matomo DB stays in europe-west3.
